Archeological excavations conducted in Khirbet er-Ra'i in the past decade have uncovered remains dating back to the 12th-10th centuries BCE. Tel Rai is situated 4 km north of Be’er Samakh.

Lachish was an ancient Canaanite and later Israelite city in the Shephelah region of Canaan on the south bank of the Lakhish River. The current tell by that name, known as Tel Lachish or Tell el-Duweir, has been identified with Lachish. Lakhish is situated 2½ km east of Be’er Samakh.
