Koonya is a rural locality in the local government area of Tasman in the South-east LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about 18 kilometres north-east of the town of Nubeena.

Nubeena is a small coastal town of 481 on the Tasman Peninsula. It's the closest settlement to the world heritage-listed Coal Mines Historic Site. Nubeena is about 15 km from Port Arthur, the regional centre of the Tasman.
