The seat of the Herbert family, earls of Powis, the castle is known for its formal gardens and for its interiors, the former having been described as "the most important", and the latter "the most magnificent", in the country. Welshpool railway station serves the town of Welshpool, in Powys, mid-Wales. It is a stop on the Cambrian Line between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth. The station was first opened in August 1860, but was resited a short distance away in May 1992 to allow for track realignment on the same day that the original closed. Welshpool railway station is situated 2½ miles north of Fron.
