Although the hill lends its name to the range, it is the second highest point of the Lowther Hills and lies on the border between Lanarkshire and Dumfries and Galloway, east of the town of Sanquhar, however the true summit lies just within Lanarkshire.

Leadhills, originally settled for the accommodation of miners, is a village in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, 5+3⁄4 miles WSW of Elvanfoot. The population in 1901 was 835.

Elvanfoot is a small village in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Elvanfoot is located at the confluence of the River Clyde and Elvan Water. The Clyde is crossed by a pedestrian suspension bridge that has been closed since 2007 for want of repair.
