Dating from 1527, the bridge crosses at what was once the City of Aberdeen's southern boundary. Bridge of Dee is situated 1½ miles northeast of St Devenicks on the Hill.

The hamlet should not be confused with the historic civil parish of the same name which spanned the River Dee until 1891, its northern part lying in Aberdeenshire and its southern part in Kincardineshire.
