The Scalan was a Scottish Catholic seminary and one of the few places in Scotland where the Catholic faith was kept alive during the anti-Catholic persecutions of the 18th century. Scalan is situated 1½ miles southeast of Belachnochan.

Within Cairngorms National Park, the village lies close to the banks of the River Avon and is said by some to be the highest village in the Scottish Highlands, although at 345 m it is still much lower than the highest village in Scotland. Tomintoul is situated 4 miles southwest of Belachnochan.
