The Scalan was a Scottish Catholic seminary and one of the few places where underground education by the Catholic Church in Scotland was kept alive during the anti-Catholic persecutions of the 16th-19th century. Scalan is situated 1½ miles southeast of Calier.

Tomintoul is a village in the Moray council area of Scotland in the historic county of Banffshire. Within Cairngorms National Park, the village lies close to the banks of the River Avon and is said by some to be the highest village in the Scottish Highlands, although at 345 m it is still much lower than the highest village in Scotland. Tomintoul is situated 3½ miles west of Calier.
