Founded in 1865 as Longmen Academy by Shanghai Intendant Ding Richang, and later becoming the namesake high school of Shanghai in 1949, it is locally considered one of the city's most prestigious high schools, hailed as part of the "Big Four" high schools of Shanghai. Shanghai High School is situated 240 metres east of 西楼A.
