Dumfries Academy is one of four secondary schools in Dumfries in south west Scotland. It is a state funded secondary Co-ed school. The current Greyfriars Church building was built from 1866 to 1868 in the Victorian Gothic style, designed by architect John Starforth. Gracefield Arts Centre is located in Dumfries. The gallery's main building, a Category B listed building, was bought in 1951 by a committee of local people who raised the money needed for the purchase and to do the alterations necessary to change the former house, which was known as ‘Gracefield’ into an art gallery. Gracefield Arts Centre is situated 1,100 feet northeast of Dumfries Academy.

Dumfries is the principal town of Dumfries and Galloway in southwest Scotland. It's a pleasant market town, with a population of 46,500 in 2020. Robert Burns the poet spent his last years here: from 1788 to 1791 at Ellisland Farm 7 miles north, then in Dumfries town until his death, aged 37.
