The river plunges in two separate streams over a lip of hard rock into a pool scoured in the softer mudstones of the underlying Raglan Mudstone formation. Pwll y wrach is situated 2,800 feet southeast of Mid Wales Hospital.

The original castle, constructed of wood, was founded in or soon after 1100 by Richard Fitz Pons, the owner of the nearby Herefordshire barony of Clifford, who was a supporter of Bernard of Neufmarché. Bronllys Castle is situated 1¼ miles northwest of Mid Wales Hospital.
