The village grew up on the south bank of an important crossing of the River Earn, whose sandstone bridge existed from at least the early 14th century, when it is known to have been repaired by order of King Robert I of Scotland. Bridge of Earn is situated 2 miles southwest of Rhynd.

It is believed that there have been settlements since around 1000 AD based on discoveries of several standing stones and the St Madoes stone, a well-preserved Pictish cross. St Madoes is situated 2½ miles east of Rhynd.
