It lies in Sumburgh, Mainland, Shetland and has been described as "one of the most remarkable archaeological sites ever excavated in the British Isles." Sumburgh Airport is about a mile northeast.

The name Toab may come from the old Norse hópr or hóp meaning a small landlocked bay or lagoon. Toab is situated 2 miles north of Ness of Burgi fort.
